The web and social networks for children

Like most parents, I try my best to protect my children from what I
deem is not good for them. I'm having trouble recently because my
daughter insists upon opening an account in Facebook. What I have
found out, is that all of these types of networks manage a similar
minimum age to open an account, and that is: 13 years old.

This has led me to ask some other questions. My daughter tells me:
"well, you have facebook, why can't I?" My daughter is 11. Perhaps I
am over protective and nostalgic, but I think and have experienced
that one can waste a lot of time on the computer doing quite simply
nothing. I would prefer seeing her reading a book, playing outside or
playing with her friends rather than sitting in front of a computer
for less than clear reasons.

What can you comment on this? Why do you think kids now want to be
part of social networks? Is it a good idea, or does it cause more
harm than good?
